Glasses

My whole family wears glasses.  I started wearing them when I was 17 and couldn't see the chalkboard very well in my chemistry class at school.  I don't wear mine all of the time, but I'm finding that I have to wear them more and more these days.  Man, getting older is lame.  :)  I really like my latest pair, though.  They make me feel trendy.  :)

My husband wears contacts (I absolutely cannot handle contacts in my eyes.  It weirds me out.  Anyone else like that out there?).  My kiddos even started wearing them as little bitty babies.  See?

Over the years, I have bought a lot of pairs of glasses.  (Ever tried to keep one-year-olds in glasses?  Man, we were buying new pairs ALL the time when they were little.  Fortunately the older they get the less often they destroy them.  :)    I've tried to buy glasses cheaply--we're all looking to save some money, right?  I was recently introduced to GlassesUSA.com.  With all the pairs of glasses my family buys, I may just have to try them out.

This cute pair is quite similar to the eyeglasses I'm currently sporting, but for at least half the price I bought mine for!

They even have a fun Virtual Mirror where you can virtually try on various pairs of glasses to see how they look on you.  Here are a couple of the pairs that I tried on:

These are the ones in the above picture.

Or I could go a little more hipster with these.  Ha!

Try on your own online eyeglasses with their Virtual Mirror.  You can pick the pair you look best in or just have fun trying on hipster glasses like me. :)

Baby Dear Baby Shower: The Invitations

I recently threw a baby shower for a dear friend of mine.  I collect Golden Books and have been looking for an excuse to throw a Golden Book party for years.  I even found a site that puts books in diaper cakes here. Baby Dear was my favorite book as a little girl, and I thought it would be perfect for a Golden Book themed shower for a baby girl.  I was a bit giddy with excitement over the idea of a Baby Dear shower.  :)

With a book theme, of course the invitations have to look like the book, right?  I scanned in my old copy and prettied it up a bit in photoshop (30 years takes its toll on a well-loved children's book).

I erased "A Little Golden Book" from the front cover and replaced it with "A Little Baby Shower" in a similar font.

I just love that I was able to get the back cover and the trademark spine on my invitations, too.   (Even if the spine is a worn silver now instead of the original gold.  I like the worn look better, so I didn't try to fix it.)

I even put in the inside cover, with the bookplate and everything.  So cute!  The party information was written in a similar font to the original story and I put in an illustration from the book.

I am seriously in love with these invitations.  I guess I'm just a Golden Book nerd.  :)

1940 Census

I love the 1940s.   So much so, that every year I go to the 1940s WWII Era Ball.  I've made three 1940s dresses (and one vintage-style Staff Sergeant uniform for my husband) to wear to the events.

I also love history--I always have.  And, I love learning about my own family's history.  Combine all these, and you can see why I'm so excited about the 1940 census, which is going to be released in a couple of weeks.   It will be a wealth of information for people studying their history.

It won't be indexed when it is released, though, and the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project needs YOU to help index it!

1940 census

I'm a blog ambassador for the 1940 U.S. Census and I'm asking you to sign up to help index the 1940 Census.  Head over to the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project website to sign up to become an indexer.

Indexing is actually pretty fun.  It's almost like a game, "Can I figure out what this name says?!"  :)

As a little extra incentive to get you to sign up to index, the folks at the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project have come up with a little contest.  One entrant will be chosen at random to win a $100 Visa gift card and two entrants will be chosen to win $50 Visa gift cards.

To enter, download the FamilySearch Indexing software and complete a practice batch that will simulate what indexing the 1940 U.S. Census will be like.   See more on the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project Blog.

How do you display your Christmas cards?

Growing up, my parents always sat the Christmas cards they'd received on top of our piano. My husband's parents taped theirs to the wall. I've seen card wreaths and garlands. There seem to be hundreds of ways to display your Christmas cards. This is mine.

I use 3M tape to attach three ribbons to our basement door and clip the cards to the ribbons as we receive them.

Years ago, I found a bunch of cute, Christmas-themed, tiny clothespins.  That's what I use to attach the cards.

The ribbons are fairly short because I still have a little guy around the house who would love to yank them down.  But, as my family grows, I may replace the ribbons with longer ones.

It doesn't really matter, though, because I can fit quite a few cards on those ribbons.  The early-birds get the best, and most visible, spots though.  :)

Speaking of Christmas cards, have you gotten yours ready to send out yet? If not, you may want to check out the adorable holiday cards at Tiny Prints. I used Tiny Prints for my youngest's baby announcement and I think their stuff is super-cute.

Aren't those cards cute?!  Check out more of their cards here.
